Reactive dyes utilize a chromophore attach to a substituent that is accomplished of straight reacting with the fibre substrate. The covalent bonds that attach reactive dye to ordinary fibers make them among the most permanent of dyes. "Cold" reactive dyes, such as Procion MX, Cibacron F, and Drimarene K, are very easy to use because the dye can be applied at room temperature. Reactive dyes are by far the best selection for dyeing cotton and extra cellulose fibers.

Dyes and pigments materialize to be colored as they absorb some wavelengths of light more than others. In contrast with a dye, a pigment commonly is insoluble, and has no affinity for the substrate. Some dyes can be precipitate with an inert salt to construct a lake pigment, and based on the salt used they could be aluminum lake, calcium lake or barium lake pigments.

Applications

Reactive dyes are most generally use in dyeing of fiber like cotton or flax, but also wool is dyeable with reactive dyes.

Reactive Dyes

In textiles, acid dyes are valuable on protein fibers, i.e. animal hair fibers like wool,  and mohair. They are also valuable on silk. They are valuable in dyeing the synthetic fiber nylon, but of minimal interest in dyeing any other synthetic fibers.

Acid Dyes

Before the Industrial Revolution, the range of color offered for art and decorative uses was technically limited. Most of the pigments in use were earth and stone pigments, or pigments of natural origin.

Pigments & Solvent

Food complexion is used both in commercial food making and in domestic cooking. Due to its safety and general availability, food coloring is also use in a variety of non-food applications including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals.
